Candidate North Stars

NOT YET A COLLECTIVE VISION

These North Stars emerge from participant conversations. They are propositions to discuss, challenge, combine and refine — not statements of consensus.
How to read these

A recurring idea is not automatically a shared conclusion. Each North Star includes the evidence behind it and the tension that remains unresolved.

Eleven propositions for a future worth discussing

North Star 01
Strong Signal

Learning is something you do, not something done to you.

What it means

Learning increasingly involves investigation, creation, experimentation, discussion and engagement with meaningful problems. Learners use knowledge rather than simply receive it.

Evidence

Participants repeatedly emphasized projects, practical experience, problem solving, creation and learning by doing.

Tension

Doing cannot replace knowing. Direct instruction, practice and disciplinary knowledge still matter.

North Star 02
Strong Signal

Every learner should learn how they learn.

What it means

Self-knowledge becomes part of education. Learners understand how they concentrate, remember, practice, seek help, respond to frustration and sustain motivation.

Evidence

Participants repeatedly discussed differences in how people learn and explicitly proposed teaching learners how to learn.

Tension

Personalization should not become labeling or an excuse to avoid difficult forms of learning.

North Star 03
Strong Signal

Personalize learning without personalizing away community.

What it means

Learners gain greater flexibility over pace, pathways and interests while continuing to learn through shared experiences with other people.

Evidence

Participants supported personalization but also protected discussion, listening, collaboration, disagreement and encounters with people learners did not choose.

Tension

How much learning should be individually chosen, and how much should remain common?

North Star 04
Strong Signal

Learning should move into the world — while preserving a place to belong.

What it means

Learning happens across school, nature, museums, workplaces, communities, homes and digital environments. School becomes a hub within a larger ecosystem.

Evidence

Participants repeatedly imagined authentic environments beyond conventional classrooms while protecting shared physical spaces for socialization and belonging.

Tension

If learning can happen almost anywhere, what experiences still require everyone to come together?

North Star 05
Strong Signal

Teachers should change position, not disappear.

What it means

Educators guide, question, challenge, explain, connect and mentor while continuing to bring disciplinary expertise and direct instruction when learners need them.

Evidence

Teachers remained present across the imagined futures, but were less often described as the sole owners or transmitters of knowledge.

Tension

How do educators balance learner agency with deliberately teaching what learners do not yet know they need?

North Star 06
Strong Signal

Education should develop judgment, not merely provide answers.

What it means

Critical thinking, curiosity, questioning and discernment become foundational capabilities in a world where information is abundant.

Evidence

Participants repeatedly emphasized good questions, alternative perspectives, critical thinking and the ability to decide what information to trust.

Tension

Judgment requires knowledge. What common understanding must everybody still develop?

North Star 07
Strong Signal

Assessment should reveal what learners can understand, use and create.

What it means

Projects, explanation, application, creation, problem solving and growth become richer forms of evidence alongside or beyond recall.

Evidence

Participants questioned the contradiction between diverse ways of learning and narrow standardized methods of assessment.

Tension

Who evaluates complex learning? How is reliability maintained and progress certified?

North Star 08
Emerging

Time should serve learning, development and wellbeing.

What it means

School time becomes more flexible, with greater attention to concentration, movement, sport, sleep, rest, interests and genuinely unstructured time.

Evidence

Participants questioned long school days and discussed shorter schedules, rest, leisure, wellbeing and even the educational value of boredom.

Tension

Flexibility must coexist with developmental needs for routine, structure and dependable rhythms.

North Star 09
Strong Signal

AI should expand human agency, not replace human judgment.

What it means

AI can personalize, explain, analyze, connect, assist and recommend — while learners become increasingly capable of deciding for themselves.

Evidence

Participants described AI as an enabler while repeatedly protecting consequential choices and the final decision as human responsibilities.

Tension

As AI becomes increasingly capable, where should the boundary of delegation be drawn?

North Star 10
Provocation

AI should sometimes make learning harder, not easier.

What it means

Educational AI can question assumptions, expose missing evidence, introduce alternative perspectives and require deeper reasoning instead of simply giving answers.

Evidence

One distinctive discussion imagined AI moving away from the role of “cheerleader” and toward a more Socratic challenger.

Tension

When does difficulty produce growth, and when does it become unnecessary frustration?

North Star 11
Strong Signal

The more technology can do, the more deliberately we must protect what humans give one another.

What it means

Relationship, empathy, care, belonging, ethical responsibility and meaningful encounter are not remnants of an earlier educational model. They become increasingly important as informational and transactional functions can be automated.

Evidence

Participants repeatedly protected face-to-face relationships, empathy, emotional support, belonging and human interaction, even while imagining highly capable AI.

Tension

Which aspects of care and relationship can legitimately be supported by AI without gradually outsourcing them?

02 / Architect’s Interpretation

Three commitments beneath the North Stars

Become more human.

Learning develops judgment, responsibility, empathy, autonomy, belonging and the ability to live with others.

Make learning more real.

Learners increasingly encounter authentic questions, projects, people, environments and problems beyond the traditional classroom.

Expand possibility without surrendering agency.

Technology makes learning more powerful and adaptive, while its success is judged by whether people become more capable of thinking, choosing and acting for themselves.

Architect’s Interpretation. These three commitments are a proposed way of seeing the relationship between the eleven North Stars. Participants did not formulate them collectively in these terms.
The next conversation

These are not answers.
They are invitations.

Which North Stars feel essential? Which go too far? Which do not go far enough? And what important aspiration is still missing?
